YOGA FOR MIGRAINE

Breathing exercises to strengthen the lungs and improve the oxygen levels in the body
All of you who suffer from migraines know how difficult it can be to deal with the same — they seem to l ast from a few hours to a few days! This is yet another disease that no-one really knows the root cause of. Yes, there are genetic factors but stress and anxiety, food allergies, sensitivity to sound or light, irregular meals, irregular sleep and lack of exercise are also contributing factors.
I am giving you a seven day programme that specially works on all the areas concerned with migraine and you must do these regularly to see an improvement in your condition.
Yoga gives great importance to breath, because how you breathe will affect the health of your body and the breath also links the body and the mind. Today we begin with breathing exercises that are a must for those who suffer from migraines. Not only do they strengthen the lungs and improve the oxygen levels in the body but also help to restore and gradually balance the flow of prana or vital energy to the brain and soothe and calm the nerves.
Caution: Those with cervical spondylosis, heart problems, high blood pressure and pregnant women should avoid these exercises.

EXERCISE 1
Sit back on your heels as shown, place your palms on the knees as shown, keep the back straight
Exhale forcefully and rapidly through the nose in quick succession, pulling the stomach in towards the spine as you exhale. Inhalation will be automatic and passive between every two exhalations
Practice 30-50 inhalations at a stretch
Repeat three times.

EXERCISE 2
Sit back on your heels as shown
Bend your arms at the waist, the elbows close to the body and make fists
Raise both fists up, a bit higher than the head, keep the elbows close to the body
Exhale forcefully through the mouth (the cheeks puffed out) as you pull the arms down, taking the elbows behind the waist as shown
Repeat 20 times, exhalation should be rapid, movements smooth not jerky
Inhale deeply and slowly
Exhale slowly.

EXERCISE 3
Sit in padmasana . Sit with your legs stretched out and the back straight
Bend one leg; place the ankle on the opposite thigh close to the groin. Bend the other leg and place the ankle on the thigh of the bent leg, close to the groin. Place your hands on your knees
Bend your forefinger and the middle finger of your right hand. Close your eyes and practice deep breathing
Close the right nostril with the thumb, place the ring finger between the eyebrows and inhale to the count of five
Close the left nostril with ring finger. Hold your breath for a count of ten
Raise the thumb to between the eyebrows, exhale slowly through the right nostril to a count of ten
Now breathe in again through the right nostril to a count of five. Close the right nostril with your thumb and hold your breath for a count ten. Place the ring finger between eyebrows and exhale through the left nostril to count of ten
Repeat the complete cycle for two to five minutes.

YOGA FOR MIGRAINE – II
Kriyas to beat migraine

Kriyas help rid the body of toxins and strengthen the 72,000 nadis, which are the channels of energy in our body and form a kind of electrical circuit. Usually we fall sick when a problem occurs in this circuit.
The two kriyas being given to you today will help clean out the nasal passages. They help control migraine as they have an effect on the nerves that end in the nasal passage and they have a soothing influence on the brain to reduce tension in the face and the mind. You need to practice these regularly for two months to see the difference. Also try and practice them each time you feel the onset of migraine.

REQUIREMENTS:

Exercise 1:
You'll need a special 'neti pot' - one end is a nozzle. The nozzle should not be too thick or pointed and should fit comfortably in the nostril.

Exercise 2:
You will need a 'sutra' or thin rubber catheter (size 4, 5 or 6, depending on the size of your nostril).

Caution:
It is advisable you attempt these exercises the first time under supervision. . Both exercises should be avoided by people suffering from chronic nose-bleeding. Exercise 2 should not be practiced by those with nasal ulcers, polyps or septum malformations.

EXERCISE 1
Add one tea spoon salt to half litre lukewarm water and pour it into the neti pot
Stand with your legs apart, bend forward and tilt your head to one side, as shown.. Keep the mouth open so that you can breathe through it
Place nozzle of neti pot in the nostril that is facing upwards and slowly pour water into it. The water will flow out through the other nostril
Straighten up and blow your nose gently to remove any mucous
Now, close one nostril and rapidly exhale 10-15 times through the other
Repeat the process with the other nostril
L astly, inhale and exhale rapidly 10-15 times with both the nostrils open.

EXERCISE 2
Sterilise the rubber catheter. You can lubricate this with ghee or butter so that it slides easily through the nasal passage.
Stand comfortably and relax

Raise your hand to the nostrils and check which nostril is flowing more freely
Tilt your head back a little. Gently insert the narrow end of the sutra into the dominant nostril. Twist it and keep inserting it gently downwards (never straight up) towards the floor of the nose. Keep your mouth open
The thread will come out from the throat. Insert your index and middle finger to pull the sutra out through the mouth, leaving a few inches hanging out of the nose
Hold each end and very gently pull the thread backwards and forwards 2-3 times
Remove it through the mouth
Repeat with other nostril.

YOGA FOR MIGRAINE – III
The exercises I am giving you today seem simple. But those who suffer from migraines should not underestimate their effect. All nerves connecting different parts of the body have to go through the neck to reach the brain. These simple exercises will tone those vital nerves, loosen the cervical vertebrae, neck and shoulders, improve blood flow to the brain and help reduce tension and calm the mind. You can also do these at your desk while working.
Caution: Keep the shoulders and leg muscles loose. Move the head very gently, as directed, but only as far as it is comfortable. Do not strain. These exercises should not be done by those with very high or very low blood pressure or with extreme cervical spondylosis. Those with mild to moderate cervical spondylosis should avoid bending the neck forward.

STEP 1
Sit with your legs stretched out and back straight
Bend one leg; place your ankle on the opposite thigh close to the groin. Bend the other leg and place the ankle on the thigh of the bent leg, close to the groin.
Place your hands on your knees.

EXERCISE 1
Close your eyes, keep your body straight. Slowly drop your head towards your left shoulder — don't turn the head or lift the shoulders
Raise the head and drop it towards the right shoulder as above

EXERCISE 2
Slowly move the head as far back as comfortable. Do not strain
Slowly bring your head up and move it forward so that the chin touches the chest..

EXERCISE 3
Gently turn the head to the left so that the chin is in line with the shoulders
Now gently turn the head to the right as far as it is comfortable.

STEP 4
Slowly rotate the head clockwise down to the chest, then to the right, then backward, to the left side in a relaxed, smooth, rhythmic, circular movement
Now gently rotate it anti-clockwise, that is, in the opposite direction.

YOGA FOR MIGRAINE – IV
Inverted asanas that loosen up the cervical and shoulder areas and increase blood flow to the brain

Amigraine causes decreased blood flow to the brain. Today, I'm giving you a set of inverted asanas that loosen up the cervical and shoulder areas and also increase blood flow to the brain. These asanas also give extra blood supply to the pituary gland that lies in the brain and this helps to improve the functioning of the Endocrine (hormonal) System and the health of the body. As you do these, try and relax as you hold the final position.
Caution: Those with hernia, high blood pressure, heart conditions and severe back problems should not do these exercises.

EXERCISE 1
Lie flat on your back, your arms by your side. Slowly raise both legs to a 90 degree position
Lift your hips and back off the floor, lower your legs towards your head, support your hips with your hands
Slowly bring your hands lower down your back towards your shoulders and bring your legs to 90 degrees. Support your entire body with your shoulders so that the body and legs are in a straight line. Keep the chin pressed against the chest
Hold for 30 - 60 seconds, breathing normal
Gradually lower your back and legs without strain or jerky movements.

EXERCISE 2
Sit with your legs stretched out and the back straight
Bend one leg; place the ankle on the opposite thigh close to the groin. Bend the other leg and place the ankle on the thigh of the bent leg, close to the groin
Lean back on your elbows and slowly lower your head and back to the floor
Bend your elbows behind the head; place your palms on the floor, your fingers pointing to your feet. Press down on your palms; raise your head and shoulders to rest on the crown of your head. Hold your toes with your fingers

Hold for 10-30 seconds

Release the toes, press down on your elbows and raise your head and shoulders. Prop yourself up on the elbows, then straighten your arms one at a time and then come back to the start position.

EXERCISE 3
Lie flat on your back, your arms by your side, the palms down
Raise your legs, keeping them straight
Lift your back off the floor and bring your legs towards the head
Slowly lower your legs behind your head and touch the floor with your toes. Keep your knees straight
Hold for 10-30 seconds, breathing normal
Slowly lower your legs and resume start position.

EXERCISE 4
Repeat step one to four of exercise three
Shift your arms and interlock them above the head
Bend your knees and drop them down to rest on your folded arms as shown. If more comfortable, you can interlock your arms over your legs
Hold for 10-30 seconds
Straighten your knees, lower your arms, slowly lower your legs and come back to start position.

YOGA FOR MIGRAINE – V
Forward bending exercises for migraine
As I mentioned yesterday, during migraine there is decreased blood flow to the brain. Today I have given you a set of forward bending exercises that will increase blood flow to the head region and also stimulate the nerves which connect the various organs to the brain. Remember, if you wish to improve your condition, you will have to be regular in your practice.
Caution: Those with back problems should take care while doing exercise one and two. Those with high blood pressure, heart conditions, severe back conditions and severe eye conditions should avoid exercise three. Those with cervical spondylitis should keep the head on the floor for exercise four.

EXERCISE 1
Stand with your feet together and your back straight
Inhale and raise both the arms up over the head
Exhale and bend forward, rest the palms on the floor and bring the head to the knees
Hold 10-30 seconds, breathing normally
Inhale, raise both the arms up and resume to start position.

EXERCISE 2
Sit with your legs straight out and the back straight
Bend your knees and bring the soles of the feet together
Gently pull the feet towards the groin
Inhale, raise both arms, exhale as you bend the body forward and bring your hands to rest on the floor as shown
Hold for 10-30 seconds, breathing normally
Inhale slowly as you raise your arms and body up and come back to start position.

EXERCISE 3
Stand straight with your legs spread about a metre apart
Bend forward from the hips and place your hands on the floor
Catch hold of both your ankles as shown and bring your head to rest on the floor
Hold for 10-30 seconds, breathing normally
Slowly resume to the start position.

EXERCISE 4
Lie on your back, your arms by your side
Inhale and raise your right leg
Bend the right leg, clasp your right knee with your hands and exhale as you bring your chin to your knee
Hold position 10-30 seconds, breathing normally
Repeat with the left leg
Now, inhale and raise both your legs
Bend the knees; clasp them with your hands as shown, exhale as you bring the chin to the knees
Hold for 10-30 seconds, breathing normally
Straighten the legs, and slowly resume start position.

*COCONUT WATER*
*Here is some information about Coconut Water:

'It's a natural isotonic beverage, with the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood. It's the fluid of life, so to speak.'

During the Pacific War of 1941-45, both sides in the conflict regularly used coconut water - siphoned directly from the nut - to give emergency plasma transfusions to wounded soldiers..

Most coconut water is still consumed fresh in tropical coastal areas - once exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional
characteristics, and begins to ferment.

Coconut Water is More Nutritious than whole milk - Less fat and NO cholesterol!
Coconut Water is More Healthy than Orange Juice - Much lower calories

Chakras in our body... Very Usefull

Chakras
Amplifying the Energy of the Chakras

Chakras are the subtle energy centers of the body. The ancient Indian Yogis understood the nature of the subtle energy which drives all biological function. They called these centers “Chakras” which literally means “ wheels.” Those who see energy often perceive the chakras as spinning with a wheel-like appearance.
This energy is most commonly referred to as chi or prana and it is the animating force behind all living things. Physiologists who search for a purely physical explanation of all biological activity are on a fool’s quest, like a man dissecting a piano in order to find the concerto hidden inside. The mystery is vast.
Somewhat like Dr. Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” which moves from survival, to sex, to emotional well-being, etc., the chakras have a similar hierarchy

Chakras are energy centers that run from the base of your spine out the top, or crown, of your head. The word chakra is a Sanskrit word, meaning wheel or disc. There are seven major chakras, each a circular wheel of light spinning in your energetic system, associated with certain body parts, a color, stone, element, and function. By learning to tune into the energy of your chakras, you can begin to embrace the fullness of who you truly are.

Seven main chakras and their placement along the spine
Root Chakra Sacral Chakra Solar Plexus Heart Chakra Throat Chakra Third Eye Crown Chakra

The first chakra at the base of the spine vibrates with the energy of safety and security.
The second chakra across from the genitals holds the energy of sex, procreation and creativity.
The third chakra at the solar plexus carries the energy of emotional expression.
The fourth chakra at the heart vibrates love.
The fifth chakra is at the throat and holds the energy of communication.
The sixth chakra is at the “ third eye” between the brows and holds energy for insight, awareness and wisdom.
The seventh chakra is at the crown of the head and and helps us open to our spirituality.
Most people who are familiar with the chakras do not realize that you can activate and amplify the energy of the chakras to assist yourself and others for the purpose of healing. Since energy follows thought, when you put your attention into the chakras, you are also bringing energy there. Since breath carries the life-force energy, breathing may also amplify the energy. When you have learned to link powerful body awareness exercises with focused breathing, and vortex the chakras, the energy you generate becomes remarkable

Muladhara, or Root, Chakra
This deep red chakra grounds and connects us to the earth. When our root chakra is open, we feel a sense of belonging. We deserve to be here and to be happy. This chakra focuses on our needs. Basic needs like food, shelter, and water are necessary in order for this chakra to feel balanced. Beyond that, we can use food (both “real” food and all of the things that feed us that don’t come on our plate) in our lives to help us feel more present in our bodies.
Stones: Ruby, Bloodstone, Hematite
Element: Earth
Body Part(s): Adrenal Glands, associated with survival (fight or flight) instincts
Svadhisthana, or Sacral, Chakra
This calming orange wheel goes round in our lower abdomen, right below the navel. This chakra is associated with health, pleasure, feelings, and sexuality. When the sacral chakra is balanced, we feel abundant, we know that we are deserving of pleasure in all areas of our lives. It is this chakra that helps us feel free to let our emotions flow through our lives, taking them as they come and knowing that they will pass, knowing that just as emotions are fluid, so is life. When we are able to find ways to accept and express our emotions, then we are able to keep our emotional, as well as physical, bodies healthy.
Stones: Carnelian, Tiger’s Eye, Onyx
Element: Water
Body Part(s): Testicles, Ovaries, in charge of sexual development
Manipura, or Solar Plexus, Chakra
This bright yellow ball of fire heats up our personal sense of power. Located at the solar plexus, this chakra helps to center us. It is our power center where we develop our autonomy and sense of self. When this chakra is open, we feel worthy of all that life has to offer us. We realize the power we possess to create the life of our dreams is already alive inside of us. When we harness the energy of the solar plexus chakra, we find the strength to conquer our dreams and goals.
Stones: Topaz, Citrine, Amber
Element: Fire
Body Part(s): Pancreas, controls digestion
Anahata, or Heart, Chakra
Our heart center creates balance in our lives. When we move into our heart chakra, we feel love and compassion toward ourselves. Once we have learned to be kind to ourselves, then we are able to extend that kindness to others. The heart chakra allows us to live our lives from an understanding, considerate, and peaceful place. It connects us to others, our surroundings, and the universe. When we tap into our heart chakra, love radiates around us and out into the world.
Stones: Rose Quartz, Diamond, Peridot
Element: Air
Body Part(s): Thymus, helps build immune system
Visuddha, or Throat, Chakra
The blue of this energy center spins its truth in our throat, helping us to be authentic in the way we live our lives. The throat chakra is where we communicate, where we are able to openly share our life perspective. Part of speaking truthfully involves carefully considering our words and the effect they will have once they have been spoken, causing us to consciously choose what we say to others. This, however, does not mean that we bottle our words up inside. It means that we try to look at all perspectives and find a respectful way to present our voice. Be clear, ask for what you want.
Stones: Turquoise, Blue Agate, Aquamarine
Element: Sound
Body Part(s): Thyroid, controls metabolism
Ajna, or Third Eye, Chakra
The violet light of this chakra makes its mark on our forehead, between the eyebrows and slightly above. This is where we see, where our inner eye lives. When we have an important decision to make or are feeling uncertain in our lives, it helps to focus on the third eye and to seek guidance. Everything we need to know is inside of us. Each one of us has all of the answers to all of the questions that we ask. What we need to do is slow down, take some time out, listen and trust in our own wisdom.
Stones: Sapphire, Tanzanite, Lapis Lazuli
Element: Light
Body Part(s): Pituitary Gland, influences growth and hormones
Sahasrara, or Crown, Chakra
Bright white light glows at the top of our head, radiating upward, reaching its rays out into the world beyond us. When we are grounded in our bodies, we are able to accept the ever-changing world that moves around us. Once we have accepted that change, we can work on building a strong sense of self, knowing that we deserve to fulfill our dreams. Having learned to love ourselves, we can then let that love move beyond the boundaries of our self and enter into our interactions with others. When we know how to love ourselves and others, then we are able to speak our truth from a place of integrity and respect for all involved in the conversation. When we are able to openly be honest, we can then go inside and listen quietly to our inner voice, which guides us. Going inside, we discover that though it often seems we are alone in this journey of life, we are really connected to everything. The white light radiates out from our crown and blends into the rest of the light that flows from all other beings. We are all one.
Stones: Amathyst, Alexandrite
Element: Thought
Body Part(s): Pineal Gland, regulates natural body rhythms

Oil Pulling an Amazing Therapy

Oil Pulling an Amazing Therapy

Oil pulling, is a conventional Indian folk remedy that engrosses rinsing or swishing oil in the mouth for treating oral and systemic health benefits.

In the Ayurvedic text Charaksamhita the references were found and it is known as Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha.

Dr. Karach says, the result shows that the oil pulling helps to eliminate diseases like, migraine headaches, bronchitis, diseased teeth, arterio thrombosis, chronic blood disorders such as leukaemia, arthritis and related illnesses, neuro physiological paralysis, eczema, gastro enteritis, peritonitis, heart disease, kidney disease, meningitis, and women’s hormonal disorders.

It also heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis and prevents the growth of malignant tumours, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is also cured by oil pulling

Sesame and Sunflower oil are the most recommended for oil pulling. Use cold pressed oil a first choice. It’s not necessary to go for organic oil only, one can have normal refined oil from the supermarket and that has proven effective for many.

The healing process is accomplished by the human organism on its own. In this way it is possible to heal cells, tissue and all organs simultaneously, the body itself gets rid of toxic waste without disturbing the healthy microflora.

Procedure

In the morning in empty stomach before eating and drinking take one tablespoon of oil in the mouth and remind this not to swallow it.

The oil is put in the mouth and chin tilted up move

the oil slowly swished, sucked, chomped and pulled through the teeth for 15 to 20 minutes.

This practice makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva

and swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes

to draw toxins out of the blood.

The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic.

As the procedure continues, the oil changes from

yellow and oily consistency to thin, white foam. If

the oil is still yellow and it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth and the mouth must be rinsed thoroughly with normal tap water.

After this, clean the sink properly, with some antibacterial soap, as the spittle is full of harmful bacteria and toxic bodily waste. If one were to see one drop of this liquid magnified 600 times under a microscope, one would see microbes in their first stage of development.

It is important to understand that during the oil-pulling/ swishing process one's metabolism is strengthen. This leads to better health. One of the most outstanding results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.
The oil pulling /swishing is done best before

breakfast. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated three times a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.

Precautions Do not swallow. The oil should be spat out. But unintentionally if you swallow there is nothing to worry. It will go out through faeces. Nothing is to be done. If you are allergic to a particular brand of oil, change the brand of oil or oil itself to different oil. Sunflower and Sesame oil have been found to be equally effective in curing diseases. Other oils were not found to be as good. Do not blame oil pulling by practicing with other oils. Use refined oils.

Q: Q. hello mam i am so slim i wnt to become little fit amala
A: A. Before we start on any dietary changes it is necessary to do your entire blood profile i.e. B12, D3, calcium, C.B.C., total cholesterol, blood sugar fasting and stools E.S.R. This is needed so we know that they are no deficiencies or disorders. Till then add nuts like peanuts, cashew nuts and almonds about 200 Gms. Have milk with honey and 2 bananas daily. Shift to organic food as chemicals is the cause of degenerative disease and depletes calcium and vitamins, causes a lot of body pain. It stops weight loss, increases size, as chemicals pumped in them to make them look big are indirectly ingested by us. Eat early dinner by 7.30 to 8p.m. Have plenty of water, whole grains, 50% of the food should be fruits and vegetables. Use filtered or cold pressed oils like ground nut, sesame mustard. Some common known brands are Greenway and Conscious. Cut down on caffeine add herbal teas and infusions like peppermint apple cinnamon, green tea, jasmine.

Sore Throat

Sore Throat

What causes sore throats?
Sore throats can be caused by many things. Viruses (like those that cause colds) can lead to a sore throat. Bacteria can also cause a sore throat, as can smoking, breathing polluted air, drinking alcohol, and hay fever and other allergies.

What is tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis means swelling of the tonsils (at the back of your mouth on each side of your throat). It can cause a sore throat and other symptoms. Signs of strep throat and tonsillitis are often alike (see the box below). Tonsillitis is usually caused by bacteria, though sometimes a virus may be involved.

Symptoms of tonsillitis or strep throat
Sore throat
Fever
Headache
Vomiting
White patches in your throat or on your tonsils
Pain when you swallow
Swollen, red tonsils
Sore glands in your jaw and throat

If I have tonsillitis, will I need a tonsillectomy?
Tonsillectomy is a surgery used to remove tonsils. Most people who have tonsillitis don't need a tonsillectomy. You might need a tonsillectomy if you get severe tonsillitis a lot or if your tonsils are too large and cause problems with your breathing. Your doctor can tell you if a tonsillectomy is needed.

What is strep throat?
Strep throat is caused by a type of bacteria called Streptococcus. The pain of strep throat often feels much like sore throats caused by other bacteria or by viruses. What's important and different about strep throat is that if it isn't treated it can sometimes result in rheumatic fever, which can damage the valves of the heart.

What is mononucleosis?
Mononucleosis (mono) is a viral infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. One of the main signs of mono is a sore throat that may last for 1 to 4 weeks. Other signs include swollen glands in your neck, armpits and groin, fever and chills, headache, and feeling tired.

What tests may be used to find the cause of my sore throat?
Your doctor may do a rapid strep test, a throat culture or both. A rapid strep test will give results fast--usually within about 15 minutes. But the test won't tell if your sore throat is caused by a bacterium other than Streptococcus or if it's caused by a virus. A throat culture takes longer--about 24 hours--but it's more accurate. If your doctor thinks you may have mono, he or she will probably do a blood test.

What is the treatment for a sore throat caused by bacteria?
If your sore throat is caused by Streptococcus, your family doctor will probably prescribe penicillin, taken by mouth for 10 days. Another antibiotic, called erythromycin, can be used if you're allergic to penicillin. If your sore throat is caused by a different bacteria, your doctor may prescribe another type of antibiotic.

What is the treatment for a sore throat caused by a virus?
Antibiotics don't work against viruses. Infections caused by viruses usually just have to run their course. Most symptoms caused by a cold-type virus go away in a week to 10 days.

Symptoms caused by mono can last for 4 weeks or more. If you have mono, your doctor will probably suggest that you get plenty of rest and that you not exercise too hard. You can take acetaminophen (brand name: Tylenol), ibuprofen (brand names: Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) or naproxen (brand name: Aleve) for the headache and other aches.

What about a sore throat that's caused by allergies?
If a sore throat is a symptom of hay fever or another allergy, your doctor can help you figure out how to avoid the things that trigger your allergies. Or you may need to take medicine for your allergies.

How can I avoid catching or passing a sore throat?
The best ways to avoid catching or passing the viruses and bacteria that can lead to a sore throat are to wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Easing the pain of a sore throat
Take acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen.
Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per glass of water).
Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.
Suck on flavored frozen desserts (such as Popsicles).
Use a humidifier in your bedroom or other rooms you spend lots of time in.
Drink lots of liquids.

Acidity

Acidity

Acidity refers to a set of symptoms caused by an inequity. More names for acidity are hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia. Acid reflux or Acidity is one of the most normal diseases that cause heart burns in the upper body

Acidity can be a result of inappropriate dietary regimen or stress. It is a problem which when left unattended to, results in peptic ulcer and other complications. It is quite a simple problem when it begins, but it can get out of hand easily if not taken critically. It means the excess secretion of acid by the gastric glands of the stomach.

The usual signs of heartburn are a burning sensation or pain in the stomach after one to four hours of a meal. The too much secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach causes acidity. Acidity can be a result of improper dietary regimen or stress

The too much secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach causes acidity. Some causes of acidity include Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, chocolate, citrus, tomato, peppermint, fried and fatty foods, over-eating, stress, some medications, and being overweight. Acid Reflux Disease causes harms to the esophagus as the acidic contents from the stomach, containing acids and pepsin, pushes back to the esophagus since the sphincter develops into weak and can no-more prevent the contents from stomach from gushing back in esophagus

Skipping meals, not eating on time, fried and spicy food, stress, anxiety, insomnia, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, alcohol, and wearing tight clothes can give you hyperacidity and heartburn.

Acidity is a problem that occurs very commonly; so going in for allopathic medications every time doesn't seem to be a very good thought. Some herbal remedies are very effective in the treatment and prevention of acidity

Symptoms of Acidity
The main symptoms of acidity are:
Dyspepsia and heartburn
Discomfort, burning sensation in the upper part of the gut area, especially after eating.
Regurgitation of the gastric contents
loss of appetite
nausea, vomiting
feeling of sickness
flatulence accompanied by burping
constipation

Causes of Acidity
Acidity may be caused by many conditions such as:

# Medical conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach ulcers
# Hyperthyroidism - excessive secretion of the thyroid gland.
# Anxiety, anger and stress.
# Constipation, flatulence or intestinal gases.
# Artificial stimulants or the thought of nearing the food time can create acidity.
# Excessive intake of stimulants like tea, coffee etc.
# Excessive intake of fried foods, spicy or pungent food,
# As a side-effect of some drugs used for treating other illnesses
# Overeating along with bad food combinations. Overeating puts extra load on the stomach, liver, kidneys.
# Eating too rapidly, therefore improper salivation of food.
# Excessive smoking, intake of alcohol
# Tendency to eat and drink together
# Insomnia
# Lack of exercise.
# Long gaps between meals leads to acidity, as it gives the acid in the stomach more time to act.

Home Remedies for Acidity
1) Eat a cup of vanilla ice cream or drink a glass of cold milk to get rid of acidity. This is an easy Home Remedy for Acidity.

2) Raita prepared with fresh curd, grated cucumber, fresh coriander, tomato is a sure shot remedy in aiding digestion, and helps eliminate acidity.

3) Mint: Fresh mint juice taken every day or fresh mint leaves boiled in a cup of water and sipped slowly after meals also helps to keep the stomach acids at bay

4) Mint juice before meals keeps acidity at bay. This is another good Home Remedy for Acidity.

5) Chewing 5-6 basil leaves relieves flatulence and acidity.

6) Half a glass of fresh pineapple juice should be taken after a meal for treating and preventing acidity

7) A piece of jaggery or gur after lunch and dinner prevents acidity

8) A very simple remedy for acidity is thin butter-milk mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper powder

9) One of the common Home Remedies for Acidity - Onion (pyaz): The juice of onions is an excellent remedy for acidity.

10) Habitual eating habits and a healthy diet can prevent acidity

11) Drink plenty of water (at least 6 to 8 glasses per day) and other fluids to maintain the acid balance in the stomach

12) A sherbet made with kokum and jeera gives relief from acidity.

13) Lemon rind can also be eaten to prevent heartburn

14) A glass of cold milk provides instant relief. This is an effective Home Remedy for Acidity.

15) Eat almonds to give relief to symptoms of acidity

16) Chew a few holy basil (tulsi ) leaves to get relief

17) Bananas, watermelon and cucumber have protective action against the acidity and heart burn

18) Lemon: Juice of one lemon mixed in half glass of water and ½ teaspoon sugar if consumed before meals helps to relieve acidity

19) When suffering from acidity, drink five to eight glass of coconut water a day. This is another effective Home Remedy for Acidity.
Some Foods to Avoid for Heartburn
There are many foods that are commonly known to cause acid in the stomach and heartburn. These are citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty foods such as pork chops, deep fried meat, or potatoes, aerated cold drinks, coffee, hot milk and so on. These are just some of the foods one should avoid for heartburn as consuming any of these in excess can cause acute discomfort.

However, not all the items named above react in the same way on everyone. People have different reactions to different stimulants and hence, one will need to carefully watch and identify which foods cause the greatest harm. Once you have a list, eliminate those foods from your diet to the extent possible. For example if you find that hot milk causes acute heartburn, then either stop having it altogether, or have it at room temperature or ice cold.
Similarly, with fatty foods - either totally stop having them or have a Tums right before or after the meal which will neutralize the excess acid formed in the stomach.

Natural

Natural
Weight-Loss Foods: Oats

Oats fill the bill when it comes to reducing
Hunger and keeping you on your diet plan. The soluble fiber in oats fills you
Up by creating gels. The gels delay stomach emptying, so you feel full longer,
Which helps with weight loss.

Whether horse feed or muffins come to mind when you think of oats, you're
Probably underestimating this truly healthful grain. A whole grain full of fiber, oats pack plenty of punch.

Health Benefits

Eating a bowl of oatmeal in the morning can easily help you increase your
Intake of whole grains and help you meet the Dietary Guidelines' recommendation
To make half of the grains you eat whole grains. Whole grains are beneficial
Not just because of their fiber, but also because they contain a variety of minerals and phytonutrients. Some of the
Phytonutrients include lignans, which may help protect your heart; plant sterols and stanols, which help
Normalize blood cholesterol levels; and antioxidants such as phenolic and phytic
Acids.

Cooked (Oatmeal)

Since the mid 1960s,
Many studies have highlighted the effect of oats' soluble fiber (the same beta-glucans
Found in barley) on blood-cholesterol levels. On average, eating three grams of
Soluble (not total) fiber a day (the amount in two bowls of oatmeal or one cup
Of cooked oat bran) reduced cholesterol by six points in three months.
Participants with the highest cholesterol levels saw the best response; those
Whose blood-cholesterol levels were over 220 mg/dL saw their levels drop by 8
To 23 percent. Those who ate the most oat bran benefited the most. Another
Study showed that in certain individuals, oat bran can be as effective as, and
Certainly much less expensive as, medication in curbing elevated
Blood-cholesterol levels.

Similarly exciting
Results have been seen in people with diabetes and those with high-normal
Blood-sugar levels. The soluble fiber in oats means slower digestion, spreading
The rise in blood sugar over a longer time period. Some people with diabetes
Who followed a diet high in soluble fiber from sources like oats and beans have
Been able to reduce their medication. Oats have more to offer everyone. They
Are tops in protein and manganese, providing 50 percent of the recommended
Intake for this mineral. In addition, they offer an unusual amount of iron, thiamin, and magnesium.

Selection and Storage

The bran of the oat grain is the outer layer of the oat kernel, where much of
The fiber and many of the nutrients reside. Whole oats (rolled or steel-cut)
Contain the bran along with the rest of the oat kernel. Oat bran contains the
Same nutrients and fiber found in whole oats but they are more concentrated. So
Eating whole oats will give you the same benefits of oat bran, you'll just need
To eat more of it to get the same effect.

Cooking time and texture
Are the only differences among the varieties. Steel-cut oats, sometimes called
Scotch oats or Irish oats, are whole oats sliced into thick, elongated pieces.
They have a chewy texture and take about 20 minutes to cook.

Rolled oats are steamed
And flattened between steel rollers, so they take about five minutes to cook
And are easier to chew than steel-cut oats

Quick oats are cut into
Smaller pieces before being rolled, so they cook very quickly, in about a
Minute.

Instant oats are
Precooked and pressed so thin it takes only boiling water to
"reconstitute" them. Generally, they have a lot of added sodium; the
Flavored versions also have added sugar. Try the different varieties to see
Which flavor and texture you like better.

Store oats in a dark,
Dry location in a well-sealed container. Oats will keep up to a year. Whole
Oats are more likely to go rancid, so be sure to refrigerate them.

Guide to good vision

Guide to good vision
Vision is a dominant process in the growth, development and daily performance of children. Good vision includes healthy eyes, age appropriate visual acuity, visual integration and visual skills such as eye teaming, eye focusing and eye motility. Optometrists can evaluate these components and help ensure your child reaches his or her potential.

Visual acuity: Visual acuity is the ability to see objects appropriate for your child’s age. It can be measured by your optometrist long before your child can read or recognize letters.

Eye health: Eye disease can impair vision or lead to vision loss if not diagnosed and treated. Most conditions can be treated best if caught early.

Visual integration: The ability to process and integrate visual information, which includes and coordinates input from our other senses and previous experiences so that we can understand what we see. The eye-hand coordination involved in tossing a ball, or a game of patty-cake, requires a great deal of teamwork between the senses.
Visual skills your baby is learning:

Eye teaming: The ability of the eyes to work together.

Eye focusing: The ability of the eyes to focus clearly at different distances quickly, accurately, and for sustained periods of time.

Eye motility or tracking: The ability of the eyes to smoothly follow moving objects and to move accurately from one object to another.
Common terms about eye health

Common terms about eye health
Amblyopia:
Also known as “lazy eye,” amblyopia is reduced vision in a healthy eye. Vision must develop, and development is impaired when eyes do not focus equally or maintain proper alignment. The brain ignores the information from the less favored eye. In either case, if this condition persists, the weaker eye will not develop normally. In babies, who are learning to use their eyes as a team, it’s easier for an eye doctor to distinguish between appropriate development and delays that could signal the need for intervention. Early detection of amblyopia is important because treatments such as patching and eye drops are most effective the earlier they are started.

Astigmatism:
Astigmatism blurs vision at all distances because the optical parts of the eye (cornea and lens) do not focus light onto the retina clearly. This condition is quite common, and results from an unequal curve of the cornea when comparing the horizontal and vertical planes. For descriptive purposes, imagine half of a tennis ball, squeezed at the top and bottom; the ball is now curved unequally. In the eye, this results in inaccurate focus on the retina. Lenses are often used to help focus the light to eliminate blurriness from astigmatism.

Hyperopia:
Often called farsightedness, hyperopia is when the eyeball is too short for the normal focusing power of the eye. Depending on severity, it can cause blurred vision, eye fatigue and sometimes amblyopia or crossed eyes.

Myopia:
Often called nearsightedness, myopia causes distant objects to appear blurred. The eyeball is too long for the normal focusing power of the eye.
Strabismus:
Strabismus occurs when one eye does not aim at the same object being viewed as the other eye. The “eye turn” may be present continuously or only occasionally, and the turn may be inward toward the nose (esotropia) or outward (exotropia), up or down. There is a common misconception that a child will outgrow crossed-eyes. This is not true. Untreated, this condition can lead to amblyopia.

Optometrist:
American Optometric Association doctors of optometry are highly qualified, trained doctors, on the frontline of eye health and vision care, who examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and disorders of the eye. In addition to providing eye and vision care, optometrists play a major role in an individual's overall health and well-being by appropriately detecting systemic diseases. Doctors of optometry provide more than two-thirds of all primary eye care in the United States. The American Optometric Association represents more than 33,000 doctors of optometry, optometry students and paraoptometric assistants and technicians in nearly 6,500 communities across the country. For more information, visit www.aoa.org.

The iris, or the colored part of the eye with the pupil in the middle, contains most of the pigment cells that determine the color of the eye. Most Caucasian babies are born with bluish eyes because the pigment that determines eye color is scattered thinly in newborns. As the child grows, the pigment is distributed throughout the iris, and the brownish pigment begins to dominate. The process can take several months, and is determined by genetics, with brown eyes the dominant trait.
Your baby's developing eyes

Prenatal care: A bright start

When you are expecting, proper prenatal care and nutrition are very important to the development of healthy eyes and the related nervous system. Researchers are continually discovering more about the link between nutrition and eyesight.

At birth: Opening to a new world

It might take a moment or two for your baby’s eyes to open. His eyes should be examined for signs of congenital eye problems. These are rare, but early diagnosis and treatment are important to your child’s development. Health professionals typically administer an antibiotic ointment, such as erythromycin, to prevent infection. Within a short period of time, he will begin to focus on objects less than a foot away, such as mom’s face when nursing.

The latest research shows that complex shapes and high contrast targets best stimulate the interest of infants. When setting up baby’s room, include décor that is bright, contrasting and varied. Babies’ eyes are drawn to new objects, so be prepared to change the location of items. Also have a nightlight, to provide visual stimulation when the baby is awake in bed. While children should be put down to sleep on their backs to reduce the chance of SIDS, they should have supervised time on their stomach

Common cold

Common cold

What is the common cold?

The common cold is a viral infection that affects the upper airways including the nose, voice box, throat, windpipes and the lungs. There are more than two hundred viruses that can cause colds and are commonly known as rhinoviruses or the nose viruses. These viruses cause inflammation or swelling of the mucous membrane lining the airways. The symptoms of common cold include sneezing, a scratchy throat, a stuffy nose, coughing, etc.

What are the causes?

The cold virus is spread via air particles that are expelled while coughing or sneezing. It also spreads when someone with a cold rubs his eyes or nose and then touches an object such as a doorknob, towel, bed linen and other such commonly used articles. Colds are very contagious. The viruses are airborne and are transmitted when one sneezes or touches infected objects. Anyone can get a cold. Children are more likely to get a cold than adults because they are not immune to certain viruses that cause the cold.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms generally show up about two days after a person becomes infected. Early signs of a cold are a sore, scratchy throat, sneezing, and a runny nose. Other symptoms that may occur later are:
Headache
Stuffy or runny nose
Watering eyes
Chills
Weakness
Cough and congestion
Sore throat
Fever and muscle ache.

The symptoms generally last for 2 to 7 days and in some cases may last for weeks.

What is the diagnosis?

There is no specific test to diagnose common cold. The diagnosis is based on the symptoms reported and the physical examination made by the doctor.

What is the treatment?

There is no cure for the common cold but managing symptoms is the best that can be done for the cold, as there is no specific treatment. Antibiotics will not cure colds, as they are caused by viruses and not bacteria. A person with a cold should drink plenty of fluids and take rest. Cold remedies are almost as common as the common cold, and many are nearly as ancient. Some cold remedies include:
Water and other fluids - drinking plenty of liquids can help. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which make dehydration worse.

Salt water - a saltwater gargle — 1/2 teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water — can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat.

Saline nasal sprays - over-the-counter saline nasal sprays combat stuffiness and congestion. Unlike nasal decongestants, saline sprays don't lead to a rebound effect — a worsening of symptoms when the medication is discontinued — and most are safe and nonirritating, even for children.

Soup - scientists have found that soup does seem to help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils — immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining.

Over-the-counter cold medications - nonprescription decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief, but they won't prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have some side effects. If used for more than a few days, they can actually make symptoms worse. Keep in mind that acetaminophen can cause serious liver damage or liver failure if taken in high doses.

Humidity - cold viruses thrive in dry conditions — another reason why colds are more common in winter. Parched air also dries the mucous membranes, causing a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. A humidifier can add moisture to your home.
