FISH FOR HEALTH
Fish is a unique source of essential fats ( omega-3 fats).
Researchers began to explore the possible benefits of eating
fish about 20 years ago, when the first noted that Eskimos
living in Greenland had strikingly low rates of coronary heart
disease, depression and arthritis. The explanation seems to be
the fish-rich diet followed by the Eskimos.
It turns out that omega-3 fatty acids, found in the fat in fish oil,
actually help keep the arteries open and allow blood to flow smoothly.
Many studies support the cardiovascular benefits fo eating fish in
particular and a reduction in the risk of fatal heart attacks.
Regular fish consumption helps to lower blood triglyceride levels
(blood fats),increase blood HDL(good) cholesterol and reduce the
tendency of abnormal blood clot formation. They also prevent irregular
heart beats or arrythmias. In addition fish fats helps to lower blood
pressure in hypertensives.Regular fish consumption is desirable for
those suffering from high blood pressure.
Owing to omega-3 fats'' powerful anti-inflammatory effects, fish and
fish oil consumption helps those suffering from asthma, sinusitis,
osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and other inflammatory
conditions.Fish oils have now been found to have a significant role in
the prevention of cancer. They have been found to be useful also as
brain food, for good eye sight and healthy hair and skin.
Fish/fish oils are also recommended during weight-loss programmes.
A deficiency of omega-3 fats can create food cravings and also prevent
effective burning of fats.
According to the Journal of Nutrition, omega-3 fats prevent the formation
of gall stones.
Intake of omega-3 fats has been found to help patients of schizophrenia,
manic depression, mood instabilities and bipolar disorders.Fish also
provides first class protein.Just one small(100gm) provides between a third
and a half of the protien required each day.
Fish also provides calcium, vitamin A,D, iodine and several B vitamins
including B12.
